Testing for Prostate Cancer
United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). After years of discussion, the USPSTF made a recommendation for Screening for Prostate Cancer.
Testing saves lives. NTxPCC is in agreement with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) that it is reasonable to have a baseline testing at age 40 to assess the risk of subsequent prostate cancer detection. There is uniform agreement that an early detection program will likely benefit young men in a predefined high risk group (African-American men and men with first degree relatives diagnosed with prostate cancer). Early detection is still the key to successful treatment of prostate cancer. Testing should include a rectal exam as well as a PSA blood test.
A new blood test, the Prostate Health Index (PHI) is now approved by FDA and is available in the Metroplex.
Subsequent testing may be based on age, life expectancy and testing history and should be discussed with a medical professional.
